In this Five Week Online Class you will explore the five different types of indigo vats, and the chemistry (science) behind each vat!

  • Instant Indigo (pre-reduced)
  • Synthetic Indigo
  • Fructose Reduction Vat
  • Bran/Madder Reduction Vat
  • Traditional Chemical Reduction Vat

Week One: Pre-reduced Indigo otherwise known as Instant Indigo.

Week Two: Chemical Reduction Vat, otherwise known as the traditional vat.

Week Three: Synthetic Indigo.

Week Four: Fructose Reduction Vat.

Week Five: Madder Root Fermentation Reduction Vat.

Week Three: Synthetic Indigo.

REQUIRED Safety Equipment

  • high quality dust mask and/or a respirator

  • protective clothing such as an apron or smock

  • nitrile or latex gloves

REQUIRED Equipment

  • Heat source

  • pH Papers or pH monitor 

  • Stainless Steel Stock Pot or Enamel Stock Pot 5 quarts or larger

  • 4 two gallon plastic buckets

  • 1-2 five gallon plastic buckets or a tub suitable for rinsing large pieces of fabric

  • tongs

  • stainless steel spoon (the kind used for cooking)

  • measuring spoons

  • measuring cups

  • ~*~ OPTIONAL electronic scale for measuring out exact amounts of dyes, etc.

Supplies List - REQUIRED

2-3 yards of white PFD (prepared for dyeing) cotton and/or silk fabric

OR

1 pound of natural fibers such as wool roving, silk fibers, cotton fibers, etc. 

OR

1 pound of natural fiber yarns, of your choice. See fiber content suggestions above.

  • 4 to 8 ounces Pre-reduced/Instant indigo
  • 4 to 8 ounces Powdered Indigo - this is ground indigo from chunk form.
  • 2 to 4 ounces Synthetic Indigo which can be purchased at Pro Chem
  • Water
  • 32 ounces Fructose Syrup OR 4 ounces Fructose Crystals
  • 2 ounces Bran
  • 2 ounces Madder Roots finely chopped OR Madder Root Powder which are finely ground roots (BUT NOT Madder Root Extract)
  • 8 ounces Soda Ash
  • 8 ounces Thiox
  • 2 to 4 ounces Lye (Sodium Hydroxide)
  • 2 to 4 ounces Pickling Lime (Calcium Hydroxide)
  • 2 to 4 ounces Hide Glue
  • 1 quart Clear Household Ammonia for synthetic indigo vat
  • 2 to 4 ounces Metaphos for synthetic indigo vat
  • Salt (Sodium Chloride) for synthetic indigo vat

  • Basic computer skills are needed (be able to login, access a blog, etc), you are responsible for knowing  how to use your personal device to access the internet.
  • Class can be accessed from most digital devices with recent updates.
  • THIS CLASS INCLUDES VIDEO LESSONS THAT ARE DOWNLOADABLE! If your service is “iffy” then I highly recommend downloading the videos onto your device, doing so will eliminate buffering issues.
